Director / Lead Coach
Meagan Schmitt is in her second season as head coach of Cal’s beach volleyball program after spending one year as an associate head coach.
Schmitt, a Cal alum who is one of only two players ever to play in two NCAA Final Fours for the Bears’ indoor team, was elevated to head coach in July, 2015 while Rich Feller was named Director of Volleyball. As associate head coach before that, Schmitt ran all the day-to-day operations of the program.
Schmitt was a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection during her tenure as a defensive specialist for the Bears. She was a team captain in 2010 and helped Cal make its only two Final Four appearances in school history in 2007 and 2010. She also helped guide the Golden Bears to a pair of NCAA Elite Eight berths.
Immediately after graduating from Cal with a degree in American Studies and a minor in education, Schmitt became a volunteer assistant coach for Loyola Marymount’s indoor team. She was promoted to full-time assistant the following year.
When Loyola Marymount debuted its sand volleyball program in 2013, Schmitt became a full-time assistant coach for that program as well. She helped lead the Lions to a No. 8 final ranking in 2014 and twice led Loyola to the AVCA Sand National Championships. She also helped produce two AVCA San All-Americans.
As a full-time assistant for Loyola Marymount’s indoor program in 2012, she helped lead the Lions to their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2005 with an 18-13 record. She was also instrumental in helping libero Betsi Metter earn West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors in back-to-back seasons.
Schmitt is an accomplished beach volleyball player herself, having achieved a AAA rating from the California Beach Volleyball Association every year since 2012. She was the 2016 Santa Cruz Grand Prix Queen of the Beach and won the CBVA Santa Cruz Open. She also finished 13th at the Hermosa Beach NVL event.

Owen Monroy, a successful coach both on the beach and indoors, is entering his first year as an assistant coach for the Golden Bears.
Monroy returns to the Bay Area after a year coaching in the Big Ten at Illinois under head coach Kevin Hambly, where he helped the Fighting Illini reach the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2015. He previously spent two years at Saint Mary’s College (Calif.) where he worked with both the indoor and beach volleyball programs. Serving under former USA Men’s National Team coach Rob Browning on the indoor side and beach volleyball Olympic silver medalist Mike Dodd, Monroy rounded out an already impressive list of mentors in the sport. While at Saint Mary’s, Monroy helped develop the newly formed beach program, which was ranked in the top-10 nationally during both years he was on staff.
Monroy was a volunteer assistant with the Penn State indoor program in 2012, helping the Nittany Lions reach the NCAA Final Four. His start in collegiate coaching came at Westminster College (NAIA) in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he served as the top assistant for two years. Monroy also has experience coaching in the USA Volleyball High Performance program as well as numerous clubs.
A 2008 graduate of Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania, Monroy earned first team all-conference honors after leading the Falcons to the 2008 NIRSA Division II National Championship.
